Brett Dennen

My in studio guest today is Brett Dennen. He will be coming by the station at 2pm central and it will air in Nashville, TN on 100.1 fm WRLT and online at Lightning100.com He has a show tonight at The Exit In with Nashville's own Erin McCarley. She is an up and coming Nashville Pop Star.

I'm looking forward to chatting with Brett. He has been on the show a couple times now and I first met him at Bonnaroo in 2005. It is great to see him doing so well and having lots of success. He has a cool video posted on his website BrettDennen.NET (which is a really great site) and I am including it in this blog. It is a piece they did on him on the tv station Current. I am a big fan of the station, which has an MTV meets y2k09 feel to me. Hope you can tune in and catch the show tonight if you can.

The new phone has arrived!

My new cell phone arrived yesterday! It was last summer I went swimming with my new cell phone in my pocket and...Well, I finally got a replacement. What a cool phone it is! Much better than the fill in phone I have used for the past few months. It was pink, with a broken screen, and a password protected inbox that no one knew the password to. I haven't even been able to change the ringtone on it! That is all history now! My new phone is a Nokia XPRESS Music and is like an mp3 player with a built in speaker. I've been digging the bluetooth laptop to cellphone communication this evening! And the fact that my drm music I have purchased in the itunes store plays without a glitch on the new phone. Of course, it is not an iphone or one of the cool new google phones, but man is it an upgrade! I am one happy camper! Now I just have to remember to not go swimming with it in my pocket...

ok, so on another topic. I am a big fan of the indie underground hour on Lightning 100. I would love to program a show like that someday and am always happy to hear it on our airwaves. Doyle does a great job picking the music and it is always interesting. He also has a great newsletter that I think all my friends should sign up for. Here is the latest version in fine form:

Grimeys logo
Grimey's Says Begin The Begin
I'm running a little late this week, y'all. For what it's worth, record collections have been flowing into the store at an alarming rate of late, keeping us all busy. If you're a vinyl fanatic like us, you might want to get down to the store and check out some of the sweet nuggets hitting the preloved vinyl bins.

I'd like to point your attention to the reissues listings in the "Hitting The Racks" section below. We have the new reissue of the original recordings made by legendary Nashville band Shadow 15, all on one CD with bonus live tracks from the infamous club Cantrell's. Oldster scenesters like me know they was the sh!t. I encourage all you youngster scenesters into "post-punk" to investigate and get your minds blown by what was going on in the local clubs back in the day.

Don't miss Los Campesinos!, playing in the store this Saturday at 2pm. It's a little earlier than usual for a Saturday in-store so consider this a friendly heads up. We also add The Virgins to the in-store calendar for next Monday, January 26. It's kind of a last-minute booking and the band will play at 4pm, also earlier than usual, so please make note and come rock with us.

Good luck to President Obama! He's gonna need all the good vibes he can get. It certainly feels like a new day in America.

Cheers!

~Doyle

Upcoming In-Store Events
In-stores are all free and all ages, always. Come rock with us!

LOS CAMPESINOS! - Saturday, January 24 @ 2PM
Seven-piece group Los Campesinos! (roughly translating to "the Peasants") formed in 2006 in Cardiff, Wales. Very soon after forming, they were already opening for fellow indie collective Broken Social Scene and signing with Canadian indie powerhouse label Arts & Crafts. They're touring behind their recent 2nd release "We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed" and critics and fans are raving: 'Forget the technicalities and call it what it is: a messy, glorious, and cohesive artistic document of internet café-era indie life that sounds best when sung by heart." sez Pitchfork. "They've upped the sonic oomph a notch, leaning on the piano, violin, xylophones and perfectly mangled Pavement-style guitar mess." sez Blender. They're in town for a show at Exit/In and we've got 'em for a special early afternoon in-store performance here at the record store. This one's a DON'T MISS, y'all.

THE VIRGINS - Monday, January 26 @ 4PM
New-York based The Virgins have come a long way in a short time for such a new band. After forming in NYC and playing a couple of loft parties, The Virgins found themselves playing alongside Sonic Youth and touring Europe with Patti Smith. Signed to Atlantic Records, they dropped their debut last summer and have been touring and making racy videos ever since. The Virgins make their Nashville debut next Monday evening at 3rd & Lindsley and we have them for an earlier-than-usual mid-afternoon in-store performance at 4PM. Fans of Modern Lovers and Talking Heads take note. "Frontman Donal Cumming sings about girls with an impish Jonathan Richman quality countered by probably-gonna-sleep-with-your-girlfriend bravado. The crisp, classic New Wave hooks make the band easy to like." --Nashville Scene.
The Virgins myspace

DRUG RUG - Saturday, February 14 @ 5PM
Hailing from Boston, Drug Rug consists mainly of the duo of singer-guitarists Sarah Cronin and Thomas Allen, plus rhythm section. They're a psychedelic band that had Spin magazine raving at last year's SXSW showcase, "Drug Rug created a warm haven from the bleak weather with a detectable Byrds-meets-Galaxie 500 element flowing through the sound system." In addition they've received props from NPR, Pitchfork, and Cronin's favorite magazine, Bust. Their sound has been compared to Aftermath-era Stones and the chugging side of the VU. We fell in love with their self-titled debut the day we first stuck the promo CD in the store sound system. When we found out they'd be in town opening for Dr. Dog at Mercy Lounge on Valentines Day, we just HAD to ask them for an instore and the band agreed. Join us this Valentines Day for a special party and instore with our new pals Drug Rug. Advance tickets for the show with Dr. Dog are also on sale now at Grimey's.

JASON ISBELL - Monday, February 16 @ 6PM
Jason Isbell has his 2nd full-length solo record ready to hit on Feb. 17, but he'd like you know it's a band record. It's called "Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit". The 400 Unit is his band and on the new album, they invoke the finest southern soul and rock sounds of the ages, from Muscle Shoals-soaked soul to the classic power pop-rock-soul stylings of Big Star and even the pastoral elegance of classic Traffic (who have their own Muscle Shoals connection). The album was recorded at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals ('natch) and we will have Jason and the 400 Unit here the day before release to rock the house! You can also be the first to get your mitts on the new CD while you're here.
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit myspace

DANIEL MARTIN MOORE - Thursday, February 19 @ TBD
Kentucky-based singer/songwriter Daniel Martin Moore had the rare fortune of securing a record deal through an unsolicited demo. On a whim, the Cold Spring native sent his home recordings to Sub Pop Records in January 2007, resulting in a full-length debut for the label just a year later. "Stray Age", the album in question, features the talents of Petra Haden, Jessica Hoop and others. Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, U2, Shins), the album has drawn comparisons to Elliott Smith, Fleet Foxes and other poppy/folky types. Come check out Daniel when he performs an intimate set here in the record store.

BEN KWELLER - Wednesday, March 4 @ 6PM
Remember Radish? Yeah, us neither. But we know all about Ben Kweller, who has more than transcended the initial hype of his teenage band. Whether releasing wonderful solo records, performing with Ben Folds and Ben Lee as The Bens, touring the world with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, Jeff Tweedy, Evan Dando, Juliana Hatfield, Gomez and tons more, Ben Kweller has steadily built a fanatical core following. He's just released a new EP, "How Ya Lookin' Southbound? Come in" and has his 4th full-length, "Changing Horses", due out Feb. 3rd. He's in town for a show at Mercy Lounge on March 4th and we've got him for an intimate in-store performance earlier in the evening. This one's sure to be crowded so get here early and claim your spot!
Ben Kweller myspace

GRAMPALL JOOKABOX - Thursday, March 12 @ 6PM
Indianapolis-based Grampall Jookabox, the name of Indianapolis native David "Moose" Adamson's musical project, sounds like a child slurring the words "Grandpa Jukebox." Their sound is difficult to pin down but their latest release, Ropechain, pinwheels kaleidoscopically through old-time spirituals, punk, chain-gang hymnal, deep house, and club music hip-hop, blending these disparate elements into a cohesive and unique synthesis. British music rag Uncut was moved to grant 4 stars in a recent review. Our friends at Indy indie record store Luna Music can't stop raving so we're bringing the Jookabox to Nashville for what's sure to be one of our more memorable in-store performances of the new year.

Hitting The Racks
The first significantly large street date brings a cornucopia of goodness. Here's your weekly rundown of the new releases.

Andrew Bird - Noble Beast CD/2xLP (Fat Possum)
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast / Useless Creatures 2xCD (Fat Possum)
New release from the quirky but melodic singer/songwriter, mostly recorded here in Nashville at Marky Nevers' place (lambchop). Deluxe double-disc version includes a bonus disc of rare material and alternate cover art. Vinyl on Feb. 3.

Bon Iver - Blood Bank CDEP/12" (Jagjaguwar)
This four-song collection continues down the path forged by 2008's critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago. Both expansive and intimate, these songs explore the darker and lighter natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a glimpse into the natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize Justin Vernon's music.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion CD (Domino)
The whoops and hollers that previously held together the sublime, chaotic urgency of their earlier work now signal the calm sense of euphoria and wonder that ripples through this wide eyed record. [9.6] -- Pitchfork

Robert Pollard - The Crawling Distance CD/LP (GBV Inc.)
From the stately Krautrock chug of the album opener, "Faking My Harlequin," to the schizo-frenetic closing track, "Too Much Fun," with its structural U-turns piled on top of tempo shifts, The Crawling Distance is unlike any Pollard release yet. Comprised of ten tracks, most clocking in at three to four minutes and beyond, the album includes highlights like the gorgeous "It's Easy," a rare Pollard ballad (albeit a ballad with creepy, oddball imagery) and "The Butler Stands For All Of Us," a subtle, melancholy song that ranks among Pollard's best ever.

A.C. Newman - Get Guilty CD/LP (Matador)
The second solo album from A.C. Newman, leader and songwriter behind The New Pornographers, is a set of layered pop songs of great melodic and lyrical depth. "A.C. Newman deserves every last bit of praise thrown his way. In a better world, he would be our Elton, our Todd, our McCartney." -- All Music Guide

Antony & The Johnsons - Crying Light CD (Secretly Canadian)
The follow-up to I Am A Bird Now shifts thematic focus and explores Antony's relationship with the natural world. The intimacy of The Johnsons' sound is enveloped by avant-classical composer Nico Muhly's symphonic arrangements. "A soul stirring new work with daring compositions and captivating vocals. This isn't a heart breaking; it's a heart waking." -- The Oregonian

Ben Nichols - Last Pale Light In The West CD (Rebel Group)
The debut mini album by Lucero frontman Ben Nichols was inspired by Cormac McCarthy's novel, Blood Meridian. Recorded with Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero) and Todd Beane (Glossary). Features Nichols' signature gravelly voice accompanied by his acoustic guitar, complimented by Steff's piano and accordion, and Beane's subtle pedal steel guitar. Advance tickets to both Lucero shows at Mercy Lounge - 1/30 & 1/31 - available now at Grimey's.

North Mississippi Allstars - Do It Like We Used To Do 2xCD+DVD (RED)
Retrospective includes two CDs that chronologically follow highlights of the Allstars' live performances over the band's first ten years. The DVD features a full-length documentary on the history of the band.

Matt & Kim - Grand CD/LP (Fader)
Brooklyn-based duo Matt and Kim return with Grand, their second album and first in over two years. From the anthemic opener "Daylight" to the harmony-rich, atmospheric ballad "Turn This Boat Around" and demented pop of "I Wanna," Grand is quite literally the sound of Matt and Kim discovering their voice. "All of the songs on the last album we wrote the first year we learned how to play our instruments," Matt acknowledges, "but this one is much more diverse and instead of thinking about the songs we thought of the album as a whole, too."

Modern Skirts - All Of Us In Our Night CD (02. Records)
Sophomore album by Athens, GA band -- produced by Mike Mills (R.E.M.) and David Lowery (Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven) -- a collection of fantastic, irresistible, entirely unclassifiable songs.

John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - Empyrean CD/LP (Adrenaline Music)
Eleventh solo album from the enigmatic singer/songwriter and producer -- features Flea, Sonus Quartet, Johnny Marr, and The New Dimension Singers.

Fiction Family - Fiction Family CD (ATO)
Debut album from the all-star duo consisting of Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) -- features twelve original tracks written, arranged and recorded in their homes in San Diego.

Umphrey's McGee - Mantis CD/LP (Sci Fidelity)
Over two years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay. And in an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material -- a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live onstage before recording studio versions.

BeauSoleil - Alligator Purse CD (Yep Roc)
Grammy winners (and 10-time nominees) BeauSoleil continue their scion-like march through the panorama of American music with Alligator Purse. Over the past 30-plus years, BeauSoleil has been the very heartbeat of Cajun music and culture, keeping it vital through not only their attention to tradition, but also through passionate and inventive experimentation.

The Beyman Bros - Memories Of Summer As A Child CD (Dharma Moon)
The Beyman Bros are Christopher Guest (multi-instrumentalist, writer, actor, filmmaker -- Spinal Tap, Best In Show, Waiting For Guffman), David Nichtern ("Midnight At The Oasis" songwriter, creator of Om Yoga Mix, and other popular yoga and meditation albums), and CJ Vanston (keyboardist extraordinaire who has played with Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Deborah Harry, Dolly Parton, and many more. He's also Spinal Tap's keyboardist and musical director). This release presents eleven instrumental landscapes -- the fusion of Americana, world, new age, bluegrass, and jazz is an easy, natural collaboration resulting in a meditative, richly melodic album of perfectly blended acoustic chill.

The Black Ghosts - The Black Ghosts CD (Universal)
Debut album from the dance-pop twosome includes "Full Moon" from the Twilight soundtrack, along with the new single "Repetition Kills You" featuring guest vocals by Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz).

Colossal Yes - Charlemange's Big Thaw CD (Ba Da Bing!)
Inspired by the Kiwi indie-pop formulas of Tall Dwarfs, The Clean, and The Verlaines, Colossal Yes (Comets On Fire drummer Utrillo Kushner) set out to write his own songs using piano as the main instrument.

Gris Gris - Live At The Creamery CD/LP (Birdman)
The final record from Oakland, CA's psychedelic quartet.

Jackie-O Motherf##ker - Blood Of Life CD/LP (Fire UK)
Recorded live in the studios of VPRO Radio in Amsterdam last year, The Blood Of Life contains two completely new versions of JOMF classics, "Hey! Mr. Sky" and "The Grave" as well as a reworking of last year's "Valley Of Fire" -- all produced in a very minimal but powerful style.

Hunches - Exit Dreams CD/LP (In The Red)
Portland's finest purveyors of cacophonous garage deliver ragged-edged rock & roll with devastating melodies. Their third (and possibly final) album, Exit Dreams captures their fiery live form. It's a veritable melee of vicious guitar savagery and lo-fi freak-outs.

La Otracina - Blood Moon Riders CD/LP (Holy Mountain)
Unlike so many other instrumental soundtrack bands that employ ho-hum, choose-your-own-adventure tactics, La Otracina sticks to the rails of their own twisting corkscrews and spine snapping dives. This work does not lend itself to the standard-fare apathy of background music. Blood Moon Raiders is its own ride, with its own ticket, and the doors are locked after takeoff.

Jane Monheit - The Lovers, The Dreamers, And Me CD (Concord)
New release by the Grammy nominated vocalist Jane Monheit -- produced by jazz veteran Matt Pierson --features songs by Fiona Apple, Corrine Bailey Rae, Ivan Lins and Paul Simon.

Daniel Moore - The Wolf And The Chicken CD (National Music Marketing/DJM Records)
Mixture of blues, rock and pop features Stephen Bruton, Don Preston, Jim Gordon, Frosty and Jim Price.

Of - Rocks Will Open CD (Digitalis)
Loren Chasse is responsible for a whole host of vital albums. He was a founding member of the Jewelled Antler label and has sparked so many great moments from the likes of Thuja, The Blithe Sons, Softwar, and of course his main sologuise, Of. For years this project has evolved into something of absolute magical grandeur. Rocks Will Open is the latest opus in Chasse's catalog. The music on this album is as organic as it gets. Each tone, each sound feels like it has been culled directly from the Earth's crust. Gentle drones arc toward the hazy sunlight, flickering like distant birds sailing out over the sea. Between the ghostly echoes rises a cacophony of plucked strings dancing toward oblivion. Loren Chasse's vision is perfectly expressed on Rocks Will Open. Limited to 500 copies.

Adam Payne - Organ CD (Holy Mountain)
Power-pop perfection, the Paisley Underground finally done right.

Ofermod - Tiamtu CD (Southern Lord)
Ofermod is a Swedish black metal band that was formed in 1996 by Belfagor from Nefandus.

Deathspell Omega - Chaining The Katechon CD (Southern Lord)
Avant garde black metal from France -- well known in the Norma Evangelium Diaboli movement.

Psychic Ills - Mirror Eye CD/LP+MP3 (The Social Registry)
Their second full-length is a journey through a unique amalgamation of electronic explorations, improvised jamming, and various sonic experiments.

Thom Yorke - Eraser Rmxs CD (XL)
Collects all the 12" remixes from The Eraser -- featuring mixes by Burial, Four Tet, The Field, Cristian Vogel, The Bug, Modeselektor, Various, Surgeon).

Compilations, Best Of's & Sundry Collections...

Six Organs Of Admittance - RTZ 2xCD/3xLP (Drag City)
Compilation gathers a half-dozen hard to find performances from the early years, as well as some unreleased recordings.

The 1900s - Medium High CDEP (Parasol)
New 28-minute mini-album from Chicago psych-pop troupe is a collection of outtakes, B-sides and radical re-imaginings.

Bruce Robison - His Greatest CD (Premium)
Since the release of his first album twelve years ago, Bruce Robison has established himself as a songwriter mentioned in the same revered echelon as Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt and Kris Kristofferson.

Reissues...

Shadow 15 - Far Away CD (Spat! Records)
Finally! My favorite Nashville rock band of the '80s makes their recordings available for the digital age. "Shadow 15's music sounds as current as any. British post-punk influences and Joy Division-inspired bass lines anchor a number of these songs, but also apparent are snaking guitar lines like those of instro combo The Ventures, hooks galore and as much SST-style sting as there is the discernable Damned nod. Whereas their contemporaries like Jason & The Scorchers or Raging Fire worked country twang into their punk-inspired musical brew, there is no hint of Hank in this music, just the pure adrenaline rush of their potent tension-and-release arrangements primed to detonate on demand." --from the liner notes to this reissue, penned by, er... yours truly.

Steve Earle & The Del McCoury Band - Mountain CD/LP (New West)
Originally released in 1999 and widely regarded as one of the best albums of that year, New West is proud to reissue one of Steve Earle's finest works.

Swervedriver - Mezcal Head CD (Hi-Speed Soul)
Swervedriver - Raise CD (Hi-Speed Soul)
Quintessential early-'90s shoegaze albums -- lovingly reissued with bonus tracks. Highly recommended!

Titus Andronicus - Airing Of Grievances CD/LP (XL)
XL reissue. Remastered. Patrick Stickles, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, launches his insights across a wall of defiant, triumphant rock anthems, which have earned comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, The Pogues, and The Replacements.

Parenthetical Girls - Safe As Houses CD (Tomlab)
Parenthetical Girls - Grrrls CD (Tomlab)
Remastered and repackaged reissues from the Pacific Northwest electro-pop duo.

Ronnie McNeir - Ronnie McNeir CD (Dusty Groove)
The first album from Detroit soul genius Ronnie McNeir -- an incredible blend of electric piano, soulful vocals and flowing rhythms.

Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly CD+DVD (Rhymesayers)
Repackaged and remastered -- includes a bonus DVD, previously out of print for years and now repackaged in a custom sleeve. Originally released as the limited Sad Clown Bad Dub 4 (The Godlovesugly Release Parties) DVD, it features two hours of live performance footage, backstage shenanigans, several guest appearances, and music videos for "Godlovesugly," "Summersong," and "Say Shh."

Blatz/Filth - The Sh!t Split 2xCD/LP (Alternative Tentacles)
Reissue double disc set contains everything on the LP plus all records released by each band and a bonus Blatz live/practice/sound collage and Filth's 1990 cassette demo.

Telescopes - Untitled Second CD (Bomp!)
Atmospheric shoegaze psych, released in the US for the first time -- includes four bonus tracks.

Vinyl...

David Bazan - American Flags 7"+MP3 (Barsuk)
New ultra-limited single from Pedro The Lion's David Bazan.

Will Sheff/Charles Bissell - Will Sheff Covers Charles Bissell b/w Charles Bissell Covers Will Sheff 7" (Secretly Canadian)
Each covers a song written by the other -- Sheff covers "Ex-Girl Collection" which Bissell wrote and performed with his band Wrens (on the album "The Meadowlands"). Bissell covers "It Ends With A Fall," which Sheff wrote and performed with his band Okkervil River (on the album "Down The River Of Golden Dreams").

Collie Ryan - The Hour Is Now LP (Sebastian Speaks)
Collie Ryan privately pressed three albums in the early '70s. The records were funded in part by Collie's friends at the New Age Farms carrot and fresh juice company in Lompoc, California and her mesmerizing music remained largely a secret until "Cricket," one of the tracks from Indian Harvest surfaced on the Numero Group's stellar compilation Ladies From the Canyon in 2006. Collie's music is almost solely based around her cosmic and birdlike voice and nylon guitar picking, and her lyrics reflect her lifelong study of theosophy and naturalist living. The Hour Is Now collects tracks from her first three LPs and is packaged with Collie's own artwork. For fans of Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, Sibelle Baier and Ruthann Friedman.

Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Mountain 2xLP (XL)
Megapuss - Surfing LP (Vapor)
Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold LP (Manimal Vinyl)
Larkin Grimm - Parplar LP (Young God)
Delbert McClinton - Live 2xLP (New West)
Royal Trux - Royal Trux LP (Drag City)
Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives 2xLP (Drag City)
Sigur Ros - Med Sud Eyrum Vid Spilum 2xLP (XL)
Welcome Wagon - Welcome To This Welcome Wagon LP (Asthmatic Kitty)
These titles now available on vinyl.

DVDs...

Calexico - Live From Austin, TX DVD (New West)
When they made their debut on Austin City Limits stage on September 13, 2006, their latest record Garden Ruin had taken them in new directions that even founding members Joey Burns and John Convertino might not have imagined when they first started recording over ten years ago.

The Who - The Kids Are Alright DVD/2xDVD (Sanctuary)
Restored to its original mind numbing assault on the senses, digitally re-mastered in a high definition transfer 5.1 surround sound and available as a single DVD or in a double DVD set. The double DVD set includes archival footage and a plethora of spectacular extra features.

Japanther - Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty DVD (Recess)
The main feature is a psychedelic trip through the puppet universe of Dan Graham. Also includes bonus live footage and more!

Rachel Shearer - Fakerie DVD (Family)
Fakerie is a digital séance of aural and visual sculptures by the New Zealand artist RACHEL Shearer, formerly known as Lovely Midget. Filmed in an environment to facilitate focused listening, Fakerie is as much for the ears as the eyes. Glowing white lights ebb and expand from darkness in shifting series -- like clustered stars -- as penetrating resonances of acoustic and electronic overtones decompose into the tiniest sand-like components. Traces of Mary Lucier's mid-1970s burn films and Francois Bayle's musical investigation into the physical and psychical world is present.

Full Tilt Boogie! Features Of The Month
Each month we highlight five new releases in the store. All five of these titles are featured on a special Grimey's listening station where you can preview them in their entirety. Please drop by to sample these fine new releases.

Noot D'Noot*Goofer Dust
Noot D'Noot, with their ever rotating and mutating orchestra, creates a wholly original and satisfying psillicybin-laced stew. It's as if a vintage Funkadelic jammed with Fela Kuti and Hawkwind, and the whole shebang was remixed by Air.

Belle And Sebastian*The BBC Sessions
This lovingly mastered collection of Belle and Sebastian's radio sessions for the BBC from 1996 to 2001 captures some glowing treasures. At the time, the group rarely performed live, so all these songs are noticeably different from the studio versions. A limited, deluxe, double CD edition is available which includes an entire live show broadcast on BBC Evening Session in mid-2001.

The Fireman*Electric Arguments
Electric Arguments is an eclectic and varied album consisting of 13 tracks recorded in 13 days. Each track was written and recorded in the space of one day with Paul McCartney playing all instruments bar one track, which Youth plays guitar on. Paul and Youth went into the studio with no plan or clear direction of how they wanted the album to sound. The project took a life of its own and the results will surprise anyone expecting to hear the previous sound of the band.

The 88*Not Only...But Also
Founded in Los Angeles in 2002, The 88 have released three albums including the most recent, Not Only...But Also. The band is best known for their staggering 40+ music placements in film, television (Gossip Girl, 90210, Grey's Anatomy) and advertising among others. Aside from extensive touring in North America, they have appeared on numerous national talk shows including Jimmy Kimmel and Last Call With Carson Daly. The 88 are Keith Slettedahl, Adam Merrin, and Anthony Zimmitti.

Bloc Party*Intimacy
Intimacy is a fittingly up-close title for an album that is, immediately, in-your-face and in-your-ear. Bloc Party's third album is a thrillingly radical record, bristling with percussive innovation, scorching riffs, orchestral sampledelia, and biting emotional candor.

The Chart!
Crazy chart this week. We sold lots of the top 10 or so titles and then it just drops off to ones and twos. So rather than list 25 titles that sold one copy each and arbitrarily assign them positions, this week the chart just goes to 25. Hey, come buy some records!

A classic off mic moment caught on tape

We have been so lucky to have the addition of a new employee over the past few months. One just for video recording, edit, and upload. His name is Brian Waters and this is a video he created today. I had no idea he was rolling tape when I told this story. He must have found this photo on my myspace page. Should be good for a laugh...

Ashley Monroe and Trent Dabbs

Friday at noon you can tune in to the show for an interview with Trent Dabbs. I am hoping Ashley Monroe will be able to make it as well. Trent Dabbs and Ashley Monroe are headlining our Nashville Sunday Night concert series this week. It is a weekly live broadcast from 3rd&Lindsley Sunday nights after Music Business Radio.

I've had Trent Dabbs on the show before and he is one of the great songwriters in Nashville, TN. Its people like Trent Dabbs who put the music into Music City! If Ashley can make it, it will be the first time I have had her on. I look forward to talking with her about playing the Grand Ole Opry, and deciding to not have a record deal, so she could be more than just a country artist. Jack White has taken notice of her, and just as he produced Van Leer Rose for Loretta Lynn, will likely produce a jem for Ashley Monroe.

Here is a video of Ashley Monroe sitting in with Jack White and The Raconteurs and quite the special guest!

Dave's Insanity Sauce

Here is a funny video of me eating some really hot hot sauce

Kyle Andrews

I love this kid and if I was running a record label, I would sign him in a minute! Another great local Nashville kid with a whole lot of potential.

http://kyleandrews.bandcamp.mu/album/real-blasty

Here is a blurb about him from the latest Grimey's newsletter:

KYLE ANDREWS - Tuesday, January 20 @ 6PM
Nashville-based indie popster Kyle Andrews is primed to release Real Blasty, his latest album. It's set to be the breakthrough record that tells the world about Kyle. "Real Blasty is the breakthrough album. Every element of Andrews' songwriting has matured: the skeleton electronics from the last album have come grown some flesh, the melodies have reached a new height of proverbial sing-along-ness, and the previously too-complacent guitar jangles have given way to almost-rock music" sez NY-based Patrol mag. We celebrate with a free in-store performance on release day!

Be sure to check out his free all ages in-store performance

Sushi by Kyle AndrewsAlso be sure to tune in Saturday Nights at 7pm central on 100.1 fm & Lightning100.com to the Indie Underground Hour. It is hosted weekly by Nashville's own Doyle Davis or as some of you know him D-Funk, who is the co-owner of Grimey's New & Pre-Loved Music. I love when I catch this show on air. Doyle does a tremendous job listening to music and always searching for the single on a record. He rarely dissapoints.

Here are some other cool in-store's you might want to check out:
