Saturday at Bonnaroo 2010!!!

We have two days left of Backstage craziness. Avett Brothers and Nortec Collective have already been here and a band called, Truth & Salvage, is performing right now. They have some amazing harmonies! I haven't heard of them yet but that isn't the first time I have discovered a band here!

We are pretty sure that when John Prine comes over this afternoon, Old Crow Medicine Show, will be backing him! We are also getting, Mumford and Sons! They popped in before dropping off their gear and heading over to the Lunar stage to watch the Fifa World Cup! The crowd over there is going to be insane!

We also have the Dead Weather popping by the studio for a quick interview!!!

Brandi Carlile, Caitlin Rose, and Dave Rawlings Machine will be popping by as well!

Wish me luck! I'll post the interviews here when possible.

The Flood of 2010

Middle Tennessee received epic flooding over the weekend. We are still drying out and need is great. I want to post some links to charity organizations and tell the story of our co-worker who lost her home in a fire Monday morning.

One of our sales people lost her home on Pennington Bend in Nashville. Channel 4 news was shooting video via helicopter and you can watch the footage here:

http://www.wsmv.com/video/23432920/

This was happening Monday morning and they had actually tried to get her to evacuate the night before but wouldn't rescue her dog as well, so she stayed. Her gas water heater shorted out, caught fire and exploded, catching her car on fire. Then her house caught on fire and she called 911. They said they couldn't get to her because of the flooded river and told her to get in the water with a wet blanket over her head, because her house could explode. As they were bracing for the explosion a man on a jet ski came to their rescue. Her, two friends, and the dog, climbed aboard the jet ski and with the nose almost straight in the air, drove off to safety, just as the house exploded in an eruption of fire.

Here is a video of her being interviewed on NBC

http://www.wsmv.com/video/23480945/index.html

She is lucky to be alive, and I'm avoiding using her name for privacy reasons. Many of you know her though, as she has worked at the station since the 90's and been a part of many great events, both for profit and charity. If this story reaches out to your heart and you would like to make a donation to her, you're welcome to bring or send it to the station. I had a listener say they would like to send a Walmart card.

Music in Music City!

There is so much great music going on this week in Music City USA!

First of all, I am super pumped for the My Morning Jacket show! They will be playing with the great New Orleans band, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. I do mean playing with by the way. That show will be EPIC!
It is this Wednesday at Municipal Auditorium. Not necessarily my all time favorite venue but I can tell you right now in advance it will at least make my top ten favorite shows of 2010!

Speaking of my top ten favorite shows, did you make it to Earth Day on Saturday? A beautiful day with amazing music. I missed Homemade Water unfortunately, but did catch Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek. She had former Nickel Creek bandmate and brother Sean Watkins on guitar and Sebastian Steinberg (formerly of Soul Coughing) on bass. She is so sweet and they sounded spectacular. We also had a terrific up and coming local band, The Apache Relay, that reminds me of the Avett Brothers rocking you out Indie style. Plus our headliner, BELA FLECK! His band full of Allstar Nashville musicians tackled old school Flecktone songs and much more with great ease. I could go on and on, but if you were there you already know and if you missed it, I'm not trying to make you feel sad or anything...

Ok, so also on the bill this week in Nashville is Levon Helm at The Ryman. I hate to say it but I must accept reality for a minute and say I am not going to that show. Even though it will be another magical night at the Ryman with a good 1900 folks having their minds blown with some of the best musicians and performers to ever grace the Ryman stage! (that might be a bit much but I guarantee you there are some die hards who would not bat an eyelash at that statement) It is the same night as My Morning Jacket and you can't be in two places at once. It just doesn't work. So without too much regret I'll move on and know I missed a good one.

Now also, all over Nashville this week is the Naked Without Us Event. A fusion of great rock and fashion happening Monday through Saturday in Music City. Take a peak at their website to get an idea of how cool this is http://nakedwithoutus.com/ you can also listen to my interview with the Naked without Us crew here: http://ftp.wrlt.com/production/tunedin/10/100411NakedRob.mp3 It features Tennessee Titans place kicker Rob Bironas. The event benefits his charity, which is really cool. They want to get a bus, fill it with musical instruments, and head into the city of Nashville - exposing kids to music that might not have that chance otherwise. It's pretty inspiring and no surprise the Nashville Symphony is going to help them do it. Rob also promised to help Kick Off the Naked without Us event, tonight at the Hard Rock Cafe Nashville, upstairs in the brand new Reverb Room. That is a free event, so check it out if you can.

I need to head into the production room and am running out of time. I haven't even mentioned the Rites of Spring event or that Nashville's own coal fired rock n rollers Old Union are recording a live album at Exit In this Saturday night. I'll post a link to the Old Union show here and post the Rites of Spring schedule below. There is a lot more going on worth checking out as well, like the Road to Bonnaroo show tonight at Mercy Lounge. That is free and I know Mikky Ekko is competing and if you haven't seen him yet, do yourself a favor a see him soon before it costs $50 at the Ryman. Think Radiohead, which the vocal talent of Jeff Buckley and passion of a singer like Jim Morrison. He is a Brite Revolution artist (which recently became a FREE site by the way and you know how I feel about things that are free - yay! ) so take a minute to download some exclusive music here: http://briterevolution.com/artists/mikky-ekko/

Here is the Rites of Spring schedule I promised you. If you are of age you can bring in your own cooler of beer at Rites. 6 beers per person with a two person limit per cooler.

Go out and see some live music this week!

Ryman benefit featuring Emmylou Harris, Dave Matthews, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and more

Here is the press release for the Music Saves Mountains benefit at the Ryman

The Messina Group/AEG Live and the Ryman Auditorium Announce
Line-up for NRDC Presents Music Saves Mountains
NRDC Presents Music Saves Mountains Featuring Emmylou Harris, Dave Matthews,
Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea plus special guests

NASHVILLE, TN (February 26, 2010) –The Messina Group/AEG Live and the Ryman Auditorium are pleased to announced the star-studded line-up for Natural Resources Defense Council Presents Music Saves Mountains concert.  This fundraising concert will be held May 19th at 8:00 p.m. at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. Featured performers include Emmylou Harris, Dave Matthews, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea plus special guests.  Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. by phone, the Ryman box office, www.musicsavesmountains.org and ryman.com. Ticket prices are $45, $75, $95.  Fifty premium seat tickets will be sold via online auction at ticketmaster.com starting Friday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m., with a minimum of $300.  NRDC also has a VIP ticket package including premium seating, back stage VIP cocktail party, artist meet and greet, limited edition concert poster and gift bag. For VIP packages please contact Jessica Esposito, jesposito@nrdc.org or 212-727-4523.

The Music Saves Mountains concert will serve as a fundraiser for NRDC’s campaign to end mountain top removal in Appalachia.  Net proceeds will be put directly back in to efforts to pass strong laws that bring an end to this destructive practice.

Two of Music Saves Mountains biggest supporters, Emmylou Harris and Kathy Mattea, have both covered Utah Philips’ “Green Rolling Hills”, a song about the mountains of West Virginia.  “The mountains of Appalachia are responsible for countless folk, country and bluegrass songs. Now, the home of that rich tradition is being destroyed,” Harris told The Tennessean last year.

Today, the Appalachians are being ravaged by the most destructive form of coal mining ever devised. Companies are blowing up entire mountaintops to get at the thin seams of coal below. Already 500 peaks have been leveled, wide swaths of forests have been clear cut, miles of streams have been destroyed or polluted, and countless communities have been harmed by this devastating practice.

“The Appalachian Mountains are where country music was born,” said Frances Beinecke, President of NRDC.  “NRDC is proud to be banding together with musical artists to raise national awareness of mountaintop removal and mobilize millions of Americans to end the most ecologically and culturally destructive strip mining on earth.”

The Music Saves Mountains concert is an important step in the effort to enlist singers, songwriters and musicians in the cause by bringing much-needed attention and resources to bear on the issue.

Billy Bob Thornton Lightning 100 Interview

In celebration of my new podcast on itunes I wanted to revisit some of my favorite interviews and performances I have archived during my career in the radio business, working at Lightning 100, and with events like the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

One of the more famous guests I have had the opportunity to interview is Billy Bob Thornton. Mr. William Robert Thornton came to the Lightning 100 studios in 2008 for an interview. It was Friday afternoon and Billy was in town promoting his new upcoming record with his band, "The Boxmasters". They had sent me an advance copy of the double disc album, and I had listened to it twice before interviewing him. I personally really enjoyed the record. Even though it is a bit country for my usual taste, it is well produced and was fun listening to it, especially since I knew I would be interviewing the band. I also enjoyed the production qualities and how the songs transitioned into one another, creating a unique listening experience for anyone listening to the album in it's entirety vs a particular song.

After our 45 minute interview I took The Boxmasters to the Yazoo Brewery. It was there I realized how special it was getting the time alone with the guys. Once in public, it was hard to have Billy Bob Thornton's attention for more than one sentence. The pints of Yazoo gave just about everyone at the taproom the liquid courage to meet their hero, if you know what I mean.

Here is a link to listen to our conversation. Let me know what you think.

Also, if there are any other interviews you would like me to blog about, shoot me an email or leave me a comment.

Before I post the first place blog I want to post a video that Matt Morris did in the Lightning 100 studios for an episode of Music Business Radio. It currently has 26,542 views and would have made our top 10 if it wasn't posted under the Music Business Video channel. Here is Matt Morris performing his song Money.

Also, check out the Music Business Video channel for brand new videos just posted of Nashville based musician Mat Kearney. http://www.youtube.com/user/musicbusinessvideo

ok, here is what you have been waiting for! The most viewed Lightning 100 video is by a Nashville based band that formed in upstate New York and has performed a good many times in front of a sold out crowd, even at venues as prestigious as the historic Ryman auditorium. With 50,410 views here is Old Crow Medicine Show performing the Alabama High Test in the Lightning 100 studios!
